  • Kilosa District, Tanzania - 15.03.17 - Young boys herd Huruma Ole Kalaita's cattle in Kilosa District on March 15, 2017. "Cattle are our resource. We lost lots of them and the ones that remain are very thin and sick," says Ole Kalaita, who saw 23 of his cattle die in recent months. "If the rain stops now, it is death. People will die." Parts of Tanzania, including Kilosa District, had been heavily impacted by drought since 2016. While recent rains have provided some relief, herds are depleted and sickly. Food insecurity continues with many families reporting they have been missing meals daily. Photo: Daniel Hayduk

  • KIROKA, TANZANIA - 13-10-30 - Farmers clear weeds from a contour ridge and trench in Kiroka on October 30. The trenches and ridges retain water and prevent soil erosion during rains. An FAO project to strengthen capacity of farms for climate change is underway in Kiroka, Tanzania. "It's something we may call climate-smart agriculture," says mission project co-ordinator Prof. Henry Mahoo, who teaches at the Sokoine University of Agriculture. The project aims to improve land and water management, promote climate resilient agriculture and encourage dialogue and understanding regarding climate change adaptation practices.
