A smuggler, who declined giving his name, said the illegal fuel trade provides valuable jobs in a country where a large percentage of the population makes less than $1 USD per day. Swimmers will tow the jerry cans -- and even 240/250 litre barrels -- to shore from Nigerian boats anchored just off shore, pictured at rear. The border town is frequented by fuel smugglers and many local families profit by taking part in the smuggling process. Legally bought in Nigeria, the fuel is loaded onto boats which sail to Togo and Benin under the cover of night. To ensure their stock, worth hundreds of dollars stays secure, members of the group take turns living in the small one-room building with the gasoline. They say they have to be constantly on guard. "At any time the police will come and surprise you. If no bribe is given, everything is seized and we will be jailed."
