Fuel Smuggling in West Africa

12-01-29 -- ANEHO, TOGO -- Men and boys pull jerry cans full of fuel out of the Gulf of Guinea in Togo on January 29. Swimmers will tow the jerry cans -- and even 240/250 litre barrels -- to shore from Nigerian boats anchored just off shore, pictured at rear. Legally bought in Nigeria, the fuel is loaded onto boats which sail to Togo under the cover of night. The journey takes approximately 13 hours. Photo by Daniel Hayduk
